BLOG - Three reasons to work at North Star

North Star is looking to recruit almost 200 seafarers as we prepare for the arrival of our four new service operations vessels (SOVs), all destined for the world-leading Dogger Bank Wind Farm development off the East Yorkshire coast, which is part of a joint venture between SSE Renewables, Equinor, and Vårgrønn.

Seeking an ambitious, talented, and motivated crew, we are hiring 42 qualified seafarers in the next couple of months ahead of the first hybrid-powered offshore wind fleet arriving in UK waters this summer.

If an exciting life on the open seas working on these brand-new state-of-the-art vessels, while working alongside the very best crews in the industry appeals to you, but you still have a few doubts, check out our top three reasons to work for one of the North Sea’s most well-established firms.

A rich history and sustainable future

North Star has been operating for over 135 years, and in that time has built up unparalleled reputation for delivering operational excellence, an enviable fleet, and vast opportunities to advance careers. It’s the evolution and longevity of the company that has kept our people enthusiastic about the work they do and committed to long term careers within the business from our bases in Aberdeen and Lowestoft.

Founded in 1886, North Star was first launched as a fishing company before diversifying into the oil and gas industry during the 1970s boom.

With a workforce of 1,300 onshore and offshore personnel, the firm’s infrastructure support vessel fleet boasts 41 ships and provides continuous around the clock critical support services to more than 50 North Sea installations.

In 2021, North Star made its first major move into renewable energy, winning a £270m contract to deliver three newbuilds on long-term charter to the Dogger Bank Wind Farm – before landing the fourth contract later that year.

These contracts have represented a transformational step forward for us in our energy expansion ambitions and offer the wider team an exciting opportunity to play their part in becoming a major player in the European offshore wind sector. Who wouldn’t want to help navigate the ships supporting the world’s largest windfarm?

Innovative technologies

If you’re looking for a company that is passionate about new technologies and at the forefront of developing and implementing game-changing solutions, you’ve come to the right place.

North Star is quickly establishing itself as a progressive force, developing the world’s first hybrid powered daughter craft for the renewables market. Its ground-breaking design supports the reduction of CO2emissions by harbouring green technologies which allow future innovations to be integrated as the sector advances.

By partnering with some of the UK’s most cutting-edge technology companies, we’re ensuring that our new designs support North Star’s commitment to net zero by 2040. By investing in new ships which deliver a greener, more sustainable offering for the industry and the individuals who work within it.

Offering you the best in comfort

As anyone who has worked offshore will tell you, a well-rested, healthy, and well-fed workforce makes all the difference. At North Star, we’ve made it our mission to ensure our SOV renewables fleet boasts superior hotel standard accommodation, gyms, and healthy menus to ensure we deliver the very best, looking after everyone on board’s comfort, safety and wellbeing.

In addition, we’re acutely aware that our crews’ working environment sees employees facing high-pressure situations. Factors like shift patterns and the challenges of working offshore for weeks at a time can also make it difficult for seafarers to maintain their connections with family and friends, potentially leading to a sense of loneliness and isolation.

To support our colleagues deal with these challenges, North Star has developed a wellness campaign, encouraging discussions through the initiative’s slogan – ‘Fit Like?’. The on-going initiative challenges the stigma surrounding mental health issues and creates a better environment at all levels of the business.

We’re proud to extend our commitment to keeping employees comfortable, whether at sea through our leading facilities, or onshore as we consider their mental health in the workplace and beyond.

Ready to join our crew?

For us, it’s not just about hiring people to carry out a job. We are passionate about creating opportunities, helping our crews to carve out long term, fulfilling careers and ensure we continue to have a strong pipeline of skilled talent for today and the future.
