Blog: A vision for Europe's offshore wind future

As a seasoned windsurfer, I understand that just as wind is crucial for gliding across the waves, energy is key to driving the transition to net-zero forward.

Despite some scepticism, the need for green energy and energy independence is becoming clearer, supported by growing public and political will. In tandem, the rising demand for innovative and highly specialised vessel services to support offshore wind, is a sweet spot where North Star excels.

I recently joined the company’s senior team having long recognised its dedication to helping its clients with their green ambitions, supporting our society and future generations to come.

North Star's collaborative approach with technology partners uniquely positions the business to meet the bespoke needs of wind farm developers across Europe. Whether it’s through adopting alternative fuels, leveraging digitalisation, improving operational efficiencies, or developing midi-SOV and electric SOV solutions, the focus remains on the benefits to our clients.

The company’s decision to secure corporate funding over project-specific financing also stood out tome as it reduces tender participation risks, providing long-term stability and a reliable partner for developers that will span at least a decade.

With a proven track record in scalable vessel delivery, we aim to expand our fleet by 40 SOVs by 2040. This growth is not just about size, but about delivering value, lowering costs,  improved operational efficiency, and accelerating a faster green energy transition.

Our ability to attract and retain talent is critical to our success. By strengthening collaboration across our office locations in Aberdeen, Lowestoft, Newcastle, and Hamburg – where I am based – we offer the best value to our clients.

To fuel NorthStar’s expansion plans, my primary strategy already underway, is to prioritise listening to our clients and working together, collectively rolling up our sleeves and accelerating innovation. Building close relationships is key across the developing stage and at an operational level, and I’m looking forward to all the active engagement.

Investing in new technologies to future proof our fleet, and sharing data across vessels and crews will be critical to reducing downtime and improving in field operations. By leveraging these insights, we’ll empower our clients, ensuring that they too can optimise their operations and achieve their own KPI’s.

As I prepare to attend WindEnergy Hamburg under the North Star banner next week, I look forward to reconnecting with old and new friends alike. So, if you happen to pass by our stand (319 hall B5), feel welcomed to share your stories or ideas to make a lasting impact on the global energy landscape.

Bruno will be joining North Star at WindEnergy Hamburg from Tuesday 24th – Thursday 27th Sept. Find him and the senior team at the North Star stand or get in touch to arrange a meeting.
